Pongal Celebration 2017 @ Abhis Farm

Pongal is a four-days-long harvest festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India. For as long as people have been planting and gathering food, there has been some form of harvest festival. This four-day festival of thanksgiving to nature takes its name from the Tamil word meaning "to boil" and is held in the month of Thai (January-February) during the season when rice and other cereals, sugar-cane, and turmeric (an essential ingredient in Tamil cooking) are harvested.

Mid-January is an important time in the Tamil calendar. The harvest festival, Pongal, falls typically on the 14th or the 15th of January and is the quintessential 'Tamil Festival'. Pongal is a harvest festival, a traditional occasion for giving thanks to nature, for celebrating the life cycles that give us grain. Tamilians say 'Thai pirandhaal vazhi pirakkum', and believe that knotty family problems will be solved with the advent of the Tamil month Thai that begins on Pongal day. This is traditionally the month of weddings. This is not a surprise in a largely agricultural community - the riches gained from a good harvest form the economic basis for expensive family occasions like weddings.

Horticulture Department Visit

Today officers from Horticulture Department have visited our Red Banana farm to estimate the yield for their statistics purpose. They mentioned we are the only red banana growers under their area limits and they are very much impressed with the good yield that we achieved through 100% organic farming.

Our Stud Bull

Today we bought a 15 months old stud bull (we named him MARUDHU - AFKB001).

Updates on our Farm Premise work

We are forming road as we decided to have our farm premise in middle of one of our farm land. The road width will be around 15 ft and we have used the rocks that we got while digging the well as base for the road formation.

We bought one more Kangayam Cow

Today we bought one more Kangyam Cow AAMBAL (AFKC005) in its 4th lactation with its 4 months old Sevalai Female Calf  VETCHI (AFKC006).

Updates on our Areca nut Cultivation

We planted our 4000 Areca nut (Mettupalayam country variety) saplings which we raised in 50% shade net nursery bed and they are about 20 months old now. We planted them in 6 ft by 6 ft intervals and Banana plants provides the required shade for the newly planted Areca nut  saplings.

Updates on our Banana Plantation

Our 400 Red Banana plant and 3600 Karpooravalli Banana plants have started producing flowers. Hoping for a profitable harvest later this year.

Farm Premise Plan

We slowly started alerting and extending our farm house. We also came up a draft plan on our farm premises which will be about 22500 sq ft in middle of one of our farm.

First Calving in our Farm

Today our Kangayam Cow AZHAGI (AFKC001) has delivered a female Tharparkar & Kangaram cross breed calf. We named her KAANTHAL (AFKC004) and we are glad that she has born on "Mattu Pongal". 

Our Second Kangayam Cow

Today we bought our second Kangayam Cow (we named her EZHIL - AFKC002) along with its 12 months old heifer (we named her MULLAI - AFKC003/002-000).

New arrival to our Farm

Today we bought our first Kangayam Cow (we named her AZHAGI - AFKC001), probably in her 4th pregnancy. Heard from the owner that it was inseminated with Tharparkar Semen stick and she is in her 6th month of pregnancy.

We are fencing our Areca Nut land

We will be planting Areca Nut in this 4 acres land. We have decided to fence this land as this land is very near to lake, Deers enter in to the field often. Fencing area is around 2000 sq ft and cost of the fencing per sq ft is INR 110.

We are digging Well

We tried drilling two  bore wells, one up to 800 feet and another one up to 600 feet. The water quantity was not sufficient and as it was a rocky surface area experts suggested to go for well. Today we have started digging well in the northern boundary of  our newly bought 5 acres farm and hope we will get sufficient water. The well size is 21 feet in east to west and 18 feet from north to south. We are planning to dig up to 60 feet as from our bore well experience we are certain that water table in that area is form 30 feet to 50 feet and after that its full of rocky surface with less or no water potential.

Red Banana Plantation

Today we have planted Red Banana  variety in one acre inorder to bring shade to Areca Nut spalings. We palnted Red Banana saplings in the distance of 6 feet. We are palnning to plant  Karpooravalli Banana variety in another 3 acres.

Areca Nut Cultivation - Kick start

We have decided to plant Areca Nut / Beetle Nut Trees in 4 acres. As per the guidance of KVK Salem, we have bought  around 4500 seedling (native Mettupalayam variety) from Karumandurai Horiculture Nursery.  We have brought the same to our farm and are kept under 40 by 40 shade net (50% shade) . We are planning to maintain the seedlings for another one year so that we will be able to plant them little deep. Shallow planting of Areaca Nut results in roots being grown above the ground which we need to cover with soil . If we plant at the depth of 2 to 3 feet, roots will be fully buried with in the soil and this also helps in withstanding drought.
